Acer to Launch Iconia W3,First Windows 8 Tablet with 8.1″ Display Size on 4th of June
Yesterday we reported that Asus is planning to bring the Windows 8 tablet with smaller form factor after Microsoft’s recent changes in minimum display resolution.
Now another Windows 8 hardware partner Acer is prepping their own version of Windows 8 tablet with an 8″ display.A couple of days ago reports came about such a device from Acer when amazon prematurely listed the device on their site which was removed later.
But now an Acer official from Russia has confirmed that the company is prepping this device and the official announcement will be made on 4th of June i.e next month. From what we know till now The device will probably sport an 8.1″ display with a resolution of 1280×800,running Intel’s Dual Core Atom processor clocked at 1.8Ghz to go with it 2 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage space and a full fledged Windows 8 operating system(not Windows RT).
Other expected features include a pair of camera’s with 2 megapixel rear and front shooter and the device is expected to last for roughly 8 hours of the day.
There is no official word on pricing of Acer W3 Windows 8 tablet, but if the amazon leak is any indication it would be priced around $380-400 price range which would be a great pricing for the device and would certainly give the iPad mini run for it’s money.
Over the past few weeks we have been hearing about smaller Windows 8 based tablets making their way into the market, with Microsoft hinting smaller display support with the updated minimum display resolution brought down to 1024×768.

Now according to the latest reports from the WSJ suggests that Asus who is one of the Hardware partners of Windows 8 operating system are prepping a smaller Windows 8 tablet. As per their reports Asus’s CEO Jerry Shen has confirmed their intensions of making Windows 8 tablets with smaller form factor and these devices could be released in the later half of this year. The reports also suggests that the company will be targeting the Under $300 price range for the Windows 8 based tablet from the company.
It is going to be an interesting battle among Windows 8 based smaller tablets and the competitors like Apple iPad mini and the Nexus 7 tablets which are priced in the similar price range and this would definitely help Microsoft’s latest operating system gain market share which is currently dominated by iOS.
We have heard some rumors about the supposed Surface tablet with a smaller form factor.Quite recently Microsoft reduced the minimum resolution requirements for Windows 8,bringing it down to 1024×768 down from previous 1366×768 resolution, indicating that the smaller Surface is in the works.
Recently Wall Street Journal ,also reported that the Surface mini with 7″ display will be released in near future. But according to Paul Thurrott(courtesy twitter),who is well known for his Windows platform and upcoming products Predictions, there will not be a 7″ Surface mini from Microsoft, but it rather would be the 8 incher Surface mini.
Be it an 8 incher Surface mini or a 7 incher Surface mini,it would be interesting to see the price point at which Microsoft releases these tablets.Because there is already an intense competition with 7 and 8 ” tablets starting as low as $199 from the likes of Amazon Kindle Fire HD and google with Nexus 7 and even the iPad mini.

Microsoft launched the Windows 8 platform eyeing the Tablet market which is currently lead by apple iPad and though its still early days to talk about the impact of Windows 8 tablets in the worldwide market share, but according to some new reports from Forrester Windows 8 tablet future looks bright.
According to their latest reports, over 32% of their surveyed workers favoured Windows 8 as their next Tablet operating system choice as compared to 26% who chose iPad as their next tablet, with around 12% choosing the third alternative Android tablets as their choice.
Only thing which could question the legitimacy of this report is the number of workers polled for this survey. In this survey Forrester polled around 9766 workers,so to project these numbers to a larger scale like a country or even bigger population is always a factor to be taken into consideration. So with these less numbers we can’t predict that around 200million people would go on to buy the Windows 8 tablet.
If this is really a trend in the Workers then we would see it reflect upon the upcoming Surface Pro devices which are slated for launch in a couple of days time.
We have seen many a tablets ranging from the likes of Acer W510 to the Asus tablet to the Microsoft Surface RT.microsoft touted about the build quality of the Surface RT testing it with a stage drop at launch as well as the all Skating thingy former Microsoftie Steven Sinofsky did.
But this time around there seems to be a solid competitor in the making from Panasonic, who recently announced a Windows 8 tablet under their Toughbook range. The FZ-G1 Windows 8 toughbook tablet is 4 foot drop resistant, dust trsistamt and water resistant!
Apart from all these amazing features the device also sport good hardware specifications like Intel Core i5 processor and upto 8 GB of RAM support, with storage options of 128GB and 256GB SSD,to go with a Stylus for the capacitive touch screen.
Though this would be a pricy affair when it releases later this year in March with a starting price of $2900.
It’s been a joyride for Windows 8 for the past few months, since its launch on 26th October 2012.We already got where it was headed when we got the news about 4 Million upgrades in 4 days of its launch and then over 40 million license sold within a month of general availability.
Today as announced At the 11th Annual J.P. Morgan Tech Forum at CES2013 the software giant has managed to sell over 60 million Windows 8 licenses till date. This number includes The sales of Windows 8 OEMs for new devices and the upgrades.
Talking about the Windows Store,as the store inches closer to the 50,000 apps mark, the store has already reached 100 million apps downloads within just two months of General Availability.
Microsoft launched the Surface RT devices along with the Windows 8 Public Launch on 26th October last year. There were initial distribution issues and shipping delays for the Surface RT’s ,but after the change in distribution strategy by the software giant helped the tablet to extend its reach.
The big brother of Surface RT i.e the Surface Pro powered by Intel based processor running Wndows 8 Pro version of the operating system was announced with $899 starting price in late November, but there was no announcement about a specific release date of Surface Pro.
But now according to recent reports by Softpedia the tablet would eventually launch on 29th of January,if their source close to redmond campus is to be believed.
The Surface Pro would be available in 2 versions, cheaper one with 64GB of SSD would cost $899,while the highesr end version would cost $999 with 128GB of SSD storage. Both the versions do not include the Touch/Type Cover,so those who want to buy a keyboard for the Surface Pro would have to buy the Tuch/Type Cover separately (around $120).
Though there is no official announcement about the release date,we can expect that to be announced in coming days ,as we already knew that it would be coming in the month of January.
