Microsoft Buys Skype for $8.5 Billion

Yesterday was quite a buzzing day with rumors floating around the alleged Microsoft deal with Skype to take it over and finally later in the day an official word came from the Software Giant,who acquired one of the leading name in internet communications  today.

Microsoft reportedly bought Skype for a whooping $8.5 Billion in cash.So it means its only matter of time till we get to see Premium Skype Services to Microsoft Devices and Operating System.Starting off with Kinect  for Xbox 360 ,Windows Phone 7 and other Windows Based devices.Microsoft will connect Skype users with Lync, Outlook, Xbox Live and other communities.Having said that it’s not the end of the road for non Microsoft based  platforms,Microsoft will equally support the Non-Microsoft Platform Skype Clients as well.

So get ready for some interesting services like Kinect Video Chat and the much awaited competitor for Google Voice and Apple’s Facetime from Windows Phone 7.Eagerly waiting for some Skype Goodness on my Windows Phone 7 :D

Microsoft opening 9th store at Lenox Square in Atlanta on May 27

We have earlier reported that Microsoft is opening it’s 9th Microsoft store at Lenox Square in Atlanta, today the Microsoft store team has tweeted that the store would be opened on May 27th.

Here is what the Facebook Event page reads-

Join us to celebrate the grand opening of our store at Lenox Square in Atlanta, GA!

On May 27, Grand Opening Ceremonies begin at 9:30AM, and the store officially opens at 10AM.

Come to the Grand Opening Ceremonies on 5/27 to receive complimentary wristbands to the exclusive performance on 5/28 and a gift bag. Each of the first 150 people who visit the Microsoft Store on May 27 will receive two wristbands:

  • One wristband grants one guest premier-viewing access to an exclusive May 28 performance by the 2011 American Idol winner and top two finalists, plus an opportunity to meet them at the Microsoft Store.
  • The second wristband grants another guest premier viewing access to the performance only.
  • The next 800 people to visit the store will each receive two premier-viewing wristbands to the performance. Additional general admission wristbands will be given out one-per-person while supplies last.

Microsoft has recently opened a Microsoft Store at South Coast Plaza store in California on 24th March. This would be the ninth Microsoft store to be opened in US and the first one to be opened in Georgia. Microsoft has already confirmed that they are opening another store at  Houston this summer.Also there are rumors that Microsoft would be opening new stores at Seattle, New York and Orlando later this year.

Silverlight 5 Beta available for download

Microsoft has announced Silverlight 5 Beta at MIX 11 and today it is available for download. Microsoft has added almost 40 new features and 100 API’s in Silverlight 5.Along with Silverlight 5 Beta the visual studio and Expression blend support for Silverlight 5 is also available for download.

Some of the features of Silverlight 5 Beta are-

  • XAML Debugging with breakpoints for binding debugging
  • Implicit data templates for easy UI reuse
  • Double (and multi) click support
  • GPU-accelerated XNA-compatible 3D and immediate-mode 2D API

Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Service Pack 1 available for download

Office for Mac team has just released the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 SP1 and is available for download on Microsoft site. Microsoft has added a couple of new improvements which includes calendar syncing, outlook support for Microsoft Exchange server-side rules, Outlook Redirect and Resend buttons, editing of existing messages in Outlook, and Solver integration support for Excel.

Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 1 available for download

Microsoft has recently released the RTM version of Internet Explorer 9. Today at MIX 11, the Redmond company showed Internet Explorer 10 Platform Preview 1.The build string of this platform preview is 10.0.1000.16394. Here is what the official blog says about Internet Explorer 10-

We’re about three weeks into development of IE10, and based on the progress we’ve made, we want to start engaging the development community now. At the MIX conference today, we showed the new browsing engine along with several new browser test drives that anyone on the Web can try out. You can run these at to see emerging standards like CSS3 Multi-column Layout (link), CSS3 Grid Layout (link) and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout (link), CSS3 Gradients (link), and ES5 Strict Mode in action. We also demonstrated additional standards support (like CSS3 Transitions (link) and CSS3 3D Transforms (link)) that will be available in subsequent platform previews of IE10, which we will update every 8-12 weeks.

Bing passes 30% US search engine market share

According to the latest stats by Experian Hitwise, for the first time Bing powered search has crossed 30% in US a sharp 5% increase from the previous month.The market share of rose from 13.49% to 14.32%, while the market share from the Yahoo powered searches rose from 14.99% to 15.69%.The Google continues to dominate the market with about 64% searches in the previous month, though it has seen a decrease of 3% from the February’s data.

Japanese version of Internet Explorer 9 to be released on April 26

We have earlier reported that because of massive earthquake in Japan and so as to reduce the load on network bandwidth, the Microsoft Japan team is postponing the release of Japanese version of Internet Explorer 9, today Microsoft has confirmed that they would be releasing the Japanese version on April 26.

Here is what the translated version of press release reads-

Japan Microsoft due to the earthquake disaster of the latest browser, Internet Explorer (R) 9 consideration to offload to the network line has become a key communications infrastructure, as had been scheduled for March 15, (Tuesday) 1: 00 pm (Japan time) on postponement of the Japan language version product edition offers, but we’ve been offering, this time a new April 26 (Tuesday) at midnight (Japan time) was decided to attention, please. Intends to implement progressively at a later date for automatic updates for users, to reduce the load to the network, on the same day in download only, on the same day that implementation had originally planned beta and release candidate.
