Microsoft officially announces Windows 8 SKU’s

Microsoft has today officially announced the Windows 8 SKU’s. According to the blog post Windows 8 would have 3 editions besides the usual enterprise edition. The three editions are- Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro and Windows RT. Microsoft has also announced Windows 8 would be the official name of the next operating system to be released by Microsoft.

Only 2 versions would be available for sale namely Windows 8 and Windows 8 Pro. Microsoft has renamed Windows on ARM to Windows RT and will be available only pre-installed on PCs and tablets powered by ARM processors. Microsoft has also clarified that none of the versions would be a compromised version as we currently have Windows 7 Starter edition.

The blog post also states that media pack would be available as a ‘media pack’ addon to Windows 8 pro.

    Its all going to be about the pricing of the 2 versions. For Pc its not a huge leap so if it is expensive I don’t think it is going to sell. Still, I like the reduced set of versions. Choosing a Windows 7 version was quite mind-numbing.

    And is there any info about 32bit and 64bit versions? It would double the no. of SKUs. But I guess Win RT will by 32bit only which will limit using of more than 3,5 Gb RAM.

      It think normal windows comes with both architectures. RT is 32 bit.
