Windows 8 beta to be called Windows 8 ‘consumer preview’ ?

We currently know that Microsoft would be releasing another preview of Windows 8 to public next month which was till now called as Windows 8 Beta. Now Paul Thurrott has posted that during CES 2012, Microsoft director of public relations Janelle Poole has said that the Consumer Preview would be released during February 2012.-

“We haven’t talked about the release date and we generally don’t,” she said. “We are talking milestone to milestone, so for us right now we’re talking about the next milestone being the Consumer Preview happening in late February.”
It would be interesting to see whether the PR team mentions the Windows 8 public builds internally as this or is she actually meant that the next public release would be called Windows 8 consumer preview
Further Paul mentioned that as the public preview was called Developer preview, the upcoming preview would be called the Consumer Preview and the last public preview which we used to call Release candidate may be called the Enterprise preview.
Talking about the current status of the builds Microsoft is expected to compile Windows 8 build 8190 today which would probably belong to the beta escrow branch.

Just because Jane Poole said “consumer preview”, this doesn’t exactly mean the Beta will be called like that.

She just said it’ll be a preview for consumers. Which most likely is the beta. The Beta is a preview for consumers. Consumer Preview.

But who knows what’s ms preparing…

I think that the upcoming next verision of windows public milestone will be called Windows Consumer Preview (in the other words  it is public beta) after that sometime may be june 2012 the final public milestone will be called “Windows Consumer Candidate” (RC) and the final one (RTM) will be something like that different verisions  Windows Developer, Windows Enterprise, Windows Professional, Windows Home.

Who said that 8 will be included into name.

    But thats my opinion.

I don’t understand all the computerese jargon you use.  So I will restate what I think you are talking about above in dummyese:  I want to return the Windows 7 operating system I recently purchased for my Vista computer and use a free version of Windows 8 I think they call beta in the past.  Am I right in my thinking on this, and if so when will Windows 8 beta be ready for me and where do I get it, and how long is it free typically?

    • Frotty

The Beta is free for testing untill microsoft closes it.
After that your PC will shutdown every 2 hours, at least thats how it was with windows 7

well first of all, vista is garbage unless its a dell. usually microsoft releases retail versions of OS’s in about october so it will be free til then and even before that is the release candidate which apperantly is now going to be called the enterprise edition. much confusing and a question to the versions of win8 they will have when retail actually gets released

I wouldn’t recommend returning Windows 7. Plus if you already opened it you can’t do so. Second, Windows 8′s beta (yes, Consumer Preview) isn’t meant to be run as a primary OS, even if many of us will, as it will still be buggy, unsupported, and many third-party apps won’t support it. And third, it will typically stop functioning six months after its release. Some time before that there will be an RTM version which will also usually have a six-month window. When each expires the system will have to shut down after only two hours of use, meant to allow you to back up your data and replace the OS with a paid, supported version. Relying on it in place of a real, paid OS isn’t smart or safe.

For a blog soley focused on writing about Windows 8 I am suprised that you have not noticed this untill now. They have since a few weeks back been saying that Windows 8 Consumer Preview would launch in Late Febuary. And we have know that this would in fact be the beta. Just my two million cents.

I no i sound like a douche bag here but what is a build, can anyone tell me please?

    • JefferyD90

A build is the version of the OS.  Kinda like a update for a game, or program.  It does not deam a ”service pack” title or any kind of major update, but it fixes a small problem, or adds new features.

        mad thanks

No, you just described a PATCH. A Build is the version ID they give to all the internal versions they’re making as they prepare for the final one, incorporating bits and pieces of new code, features, adjustments, fixes, etc. Each time they incorporate changes and compile a new version of the pre-release OS it’s given a build ID.
