I am trying again to download the 32 bit version. I have gotten to 16 % twice and it tells me the source file is corrupted can not finish download.

    • tim rodgers

the iso is fine. must be your internet connection

  • Cat

Why can’t this just be setup to dual boot with what’s already installed? That would seem to be the easiest way.

    Cat

  • Anonymous

Ok 3rd times the charm got it to download

  • Muqsitj

Whenever i try to open the metro apps it says that “Windows can’t access the specific device etc” can you guys help?

  • Really?

how about everyone gets smart and boot it off a flash drive? oh ya that might work…

    • Martinmt1v5

Windows does not allow it’s self to be installed onto a USB device. So yes, really. That might NOT work.

      • Sourcenemy

oh so windows dont boot of a flashdrive? how come microsoft has its own flashdrive installer out for download for Win 7? and yeah i know it only works with official win 7 iso’s. thats why i manually set my USB to bootable and loaded it with a all-in-one win 7 with all 32bit versions and all 64bit versions and it installs way fast just waitin on win 8 dl to be done and ill load it to a flashdrive and see how my SSD drive on second box likes it… but yeah it wont install in a flashdrive no thats correct(well not entirely i do have a flashdrive with win 7 installed on so i can run it like a portable app) but the install DVD/iso will be transfered to a flashdrive to install from that;)

Windows 7 does, it’s called Windows 7 USB tool. Google it. Might not work with Windows 8, but because Windows 8 is primarily aimed at netbooks/tablets it will probably include a Windows 8 USB tool.

  • Bazas

Hi, I have just installed Windows 8 x64 in a virtualbox enviroment, The start screen seems very child like, The icons are straight edges and corners and the some of the icon graphics are boring and 2 dimensional. I hope this is not going to be the final look of the start menu. Other than that it seems ok. I only installed 2 hours ago so hopefully It will get better.

  • Flykresj

Is it possible to get a guide to install this with the most success possible, either to dualboot or install over w7? Or both? I’m sure that I’m not the only one who is a little bit unsure on how this will go when I try to install it.

  • TheReid2

It can’t install on Microsoft virtual pc and not on VMWare but it works on the pc itself but I can’t hear anything. The sound driver is installed but nothing???

  • Valius

Downloading it now and will try to install on my MAC with VIRTUALBOX. No need to overwrite your existing OS.

It’s been about 1 week since you posted, did it work?

  • SCOTT

I would like a torrent version because .iso file is too big :(

    • Speedfox

lol what? why would a torrent be smaller?…

      • Noob

Er, it migh just be quicker…..

  • Fail

It took three disks to finally burn this iso. Tried installing, failed to do partitioning issues. If you are going to release something to the public, make sure at least it can install. Mac here I come, enough tinkering in front of a PC trying to figure out how to get it to run. This is what happens when you let business people run a tech company. FAIL

This is what happens when a knothead tries to install a developer preview build thinking that it is the final product.

  • thetruckinglife

this preview is very limited, you can use Internet Explorer 10 and Windows Media Player, i found i am unable to add any software, could not even watch a DVD. it does look pretty and for some reason it allowed aero glass to work on my Intel915 card? anyways its not a full blown operating system. and beware you cannot uninstall this so do not upgrade your machine. do a clean install and use a portion of your hard drive space. anyways, just throwing in my 2 cents. have already removed it from my test machine.

    • Mkmario74

Strange you had such problems. Did you update first? So far the only problem I have had is with antivirus. Both AVG and Avast would not install but MSE works just fine. No problem with drivers either. Win7 drivers for both ATI4850 and Soundblaster Audigy work fine. Runnig Firefox 7 no problems.

    • Speedfox

You do know its in pre-beta rite? They have still got a long way to go before final release…

  • Kennyawinner

Advice?

  • Mahimo

It’s not clear if it’s only for tablets or will also work on a ‘normal’ PC.  It’s not clear if you can install other programs, too.  I think MS is premature in offering an OS the demands a touchscreen.  I will try it out using an older hard drive in my PC, so no issues about formatting, etc, no data to lose.  I am concerned about some of my older softwares (I still use a few 16-bit apps), and then there is the issue of the softwares I produce using no-programming compilers (ebooks and the like).  I have a feeling that everything that ran under vista/win7 will run here, too, but with no desktop, accessing my apps will be interesting.

Count on this – if MS removes the desktop, there will be many ‘desktop emulators’ that will let you put it back in place within weeks.  I’d pay for such a software, if I had to.  Some Russian hacker will make a lot of money fast with an app that lets you install a desktop under windows 8.
I agree that MS is putting out new OSs too often, but I don’t care, so long as they leave the ‘switch to classic view’ options in place, and don’t withdraw support for softwares designed to install and run under previous OSs. It would be nice of them if they allowed older device drivers to function – I have too much hardware – that cost me more than windows 8 will, when the time comes – that I won’t throw away.

I speculate, of course, but windows 8 will probably only improve PCs as much as windows 98 and Vista did when they were first released (Vista wasn’t issued as much as excreted, but you all probably know what I mean).  New OSs DO make better use of newer hardware, but when they also turn your two-year-old state-of-the-art sound card into a ‘legacy’ device, and hide all the settings you used to adjust, then they aren’t delivering the goods anymore.  ”Better computing” means different things to different people.  Email, pictures, messaging, browsing online, digital toys, spreadsheets, power point  and word processing are about all computers do for most people, and there are times when I wonder is MS isn’t trying to limit it to that, and eliminating all support for ‘power use’.

“If there is hope, it lies in the proles” – Orwell

    • Xshaxdowx

FYI. There is a desktop, looks just like Windows 7. You just have to ‘click and drag’ or if using a touch screen, slide the app screen to the side and *BAM* you have the desktop. Can also do a search for removing the Metro app screen perm. Good Luck.

  • Pale Rider

I have build 8102 running in Hyper-V, no problems (installed the ISO as a VHD).
Good as it goes so far.
There is a regedit to turn off the ’tiles’, if one so chooses.

  • yot

Local Sec policy, login dialog broke Win8.

  • Pianista2010

I have question: If I have big twenty-one inch screen, can I use Windows 8? I’m going to buy a new computer but I don’t now. Maybe I have to wait for next year. How much do you think the computer would cost?

    • Hyraelle

21″ is fine, a screen is a screen, it’ll display everything you plug it on…

New computer isen’t the subject of this tread.

  • Kim Koldsø

Why are there so many retarded people in this thread???
If anyone is having problems with the ISO then it is probably corrupted.
Secondly this IS a DEVELOPER release so obviously it would be pretty stupido to do it on anything else than…a DEVELOPMENT box.
That development box could be any kind of virutal pc or a physical one…just not the one you are using for your daily pc use.
If people thinks that there is a pot of gold in the installer then maybe they have a problem with themselves rather than windows?

  • Hyraelle

Installed fine, as fine as win7, boot is as long as win7 ( No, it’s not faster, well for me, because of raid5/sata3 and usb3 at startup.) Even after that, it still take almost as much time to boot, mainly because of switch of OS everytime between 7 and 8.

When in the desktop, i had several graphic issue with the task manager and media player ( both at same time ), in overall, 7 is still better to me, but yea, i’ll wait further upgrade, because it’s only an app version, nothing more.

  • NB

  • suusa

    win8 couldn’t connect wifi

  • Jazzyb1234

I have an idea to get this to work in VMware. I’m going to install a windows 7 iso then update within the virtual machine to windows 8.

  • Rodted2

I installed windows 8 on a secondary partition, everything loads fine, but I can’t get any of the metro apps to load, it loads a flash screen and looks like it’s going to load the app then goes back to the windows 8 desktop.  Any suggestions? Am I doing something wrong?  Or because it’s a pre-beta nothing is really there, just place holders or something like that?

    AMD Athlon II X4 620 2.6GHz

how its very useful to us …what is the greatest advantages in win 8 ..compare to other operating system……………………

  • Aaron

    Dude this download takes foreverrrrrrr

    • EPIC FFAAIILL

      GET BETTER IINNTTEERRNNEETT.

  • AMDallDAY

I think its funny when people talk about the i7 POS processor its a glorified quad nothing more AMD 1100T kicks the shit out of it all day get a real PC

    • Mkmario74

Why don’t you try putting a quad against a quad. My 980x kicks the shit out of your 1100t. AMD hasn’t beat Intel since the core2′s. There once was a time AMD was faster, but no longer. Now if you want to get into price, well for you to get bang for your buck go AMD. Yes Intel is way overpriced, but I can afford it.

      • Flash

Tomorrow the Bulldozer FX CPU comes out.  8 Cores, and it holds the Guinness book of world records at 8.XXX Ghz.  Sorry Intel fan boy your time is up!  Oh and its half the price of the flagship I7 HAHAHAHA.

        • Kingcyprus

Better and half the price? That is a stupid comment. You get what you pay for always

          • Xshaxdowx

Ignorance knows no bounds. I mean, really, you’re using price as a basis for quality? Double Derp on you.

      • Windows_windows

lol can’t believe people still buy intel, guess the world is still full of sheep! Intel follow AMD and there’s a reason why, in fact i7 intelligent CPU boosting is a ripoff of AMD cool ‘n’ quite which has been around for years! AMD’s don’t just rely on Ghz’s for performance. the intel may beat it in a processing chart, but on all around; meaning by the time the process goes through the board AMD leaves Intel in the dust! Know your FACTS! Intels are like old american muscle cars, they can’t take corners without slowing down or they’ll smash into something!

    • tim rodgers

an hour?  it took me 5 with a T1…

    • hero

      lol yeah, microsoft using torrents.
      1) they want to track the downloads.
      2) they don’t want the software to keep being distributed after the beta ends.
      3) ….lol microsoft using torrents.

    • J H

It may have something to do with it being a Developer release, which inherently means it is half-baked at best.

  • Rodted2

I asked this once already, but didn’t get any responses. So I’m asking again…

I installed windows 8 on a secondary partition, everything loads fine,
but I can’t get any of the metro apps to load, it loads a flash screen
and looks like it’s going to load the app then goes back to the windows 8

Not all of the apps seem to be working. I am having this problem to. Just make sure you have all the updates and remember this is only a beta. Some apps may not be functional yet.
