Get Windows 8 Metro style UI in Windows 7 using Mosaic

We have earlier posted that you can get Windows 8 metro UI in windows 7 using Omnimo 4 , recently another utility has been released on net named Mosaic which allows you to get Windows 8 style tiles on Windows 7 desktop.

Mosaic (previously known as Metro Home 2) is an application that brings Metro UI to your desktop. It is a set of live widgets that shows some content from the web or from your PC.Mosaic supports WPF and HTML widgets. Currently HTML widgets has some restrictions: they are visible only in fullscreen mode, there are some problems with input.Currently some widgets are just link to something (e.g. video or desktop or control panel) but in future they could get more functions.

Currently Mosaic is in alpha stages and is very unstable, here are the some tips for using it-

  • To open Mosaic menu move mouse cursor to the right border of screen and click. This could not work if your taskbar placed on the right or left or you have more than one monitor.
  • To add widgets open Mosaic menu click on the Widgets… icon and choose widget
  • To remove widget click on widget icon in Widgets menu again
  • By default widgets are shown over your windows and can be covered by them. There is fullscreen mode in the Mosaic options which makes Mosaic to cover whole screen
  • If your widgets covered by windows just click on the right border of screen and they will quickly bring to front
  • Some widgets has options which can be accessed through context menu
  • If widgets animation annoys you, you can disable it in Mosaic options
  • "Me" widget shows your avatar from Windows. You can change it by dr

    pleasee reespond

    • Platatomi

do u really think we know? if anyone knew, it would be all over the internet.

    • Aaron

The estimate is September, so I’ve researched. This is just a rumor, but it’s highly possible it will happen. Another rumor is that Windows 8 RTM could be available as early as April 2012.

Oh my god…. This PC is going to suck, this will only work with smartphones, I will hate this as a PC or laptop, hell no please no, I am staying with 7

    • Aaron

First, PC stands for “Personal Computer” – Meaning any computer that sits on a desktop, or on the floor, or on someone’s lap.

Second, I hate when people say it’s going to suck when it hasn’t even came out yet. You can change to classic view if you’d like (It’s like Windows 7) and the Metro UI is aimed at tablets, and there has been talk about phones… But that’s something I’m not quite sure about yet.

If you think it’s going to suck, then when it comes out, regardless of how awesome it is… It will suck for you.

      • http://www.facebook.com/williams37 Josh Williams

It will not suck for him, maybe he’s happy with windows 7? I am a microsoft user, but I’m not one of you people that thinks everything they come out with is gold. I haven’t used internet explorer in 5 years, I paid for vista (the broken version of 7) just to pay to upgrade a year later… Just saying, they don’t always get it right the first time. But then again, i’m a glass half empty kinda guy

hey and what would you say on windows xp..that was a nice os made by microsoft at its 1st time..how can you say if one chance microsoft failed in the case of windows vista…peoples learn from what mistakes they had made ..that was same in case of microsoft..they learn what mistakes were made by them.and then they comes with windows7…i dont think they will be more stupid like you..who wish to do same mistakes again and again..when we learned from our past we try with our full effort to avoid those mistakes already made to be made in future again.

          • adder403

XP was not its “first try”. It was a build on and syncronization of the windows NT into the everyday users OS. Hardly it’s first attempt. And yes it was stable, but thats only because they learned from the 95,98,2000 OSs. They did learn from their mistakes, but they will fail miserably with this. The average user will not want to take the time to learn the UI, microsoft will recieve bad reviews and get scared and probably back off it just like they did with Vista. Not to mention, once reviews of the interface get out, the desktop user will probably decide to stay with 7, driving sales of Windows 8 down. It won’t last long with the desktop/workstation customers

    just a Borden on PC

  • Adam S.

I think this interface is only intended for mobile devices/tablets, not desktop PCs so there is nothing to worry about.

    • Phil

      i hope so

    • Aaron

When using a desktop, or touch device, you may use either/or interface. You can choose. But yes, the Metro UI is aimed at mobile devices/tablets.

  • Microsoft Sam

looks like crap… stick with the same design as windows 7

  • No

All this is, is Microsoft trying to control how you spend your money.

To me that type of OS is for tablets and smart phones, what Microsoft is trying to do is make a OS that is usable on all devices. A touch screen to me is NOT a desktop monitor, they are for things like bank machines to help people move quickly.

I guess I will have to go to Apple where they understand things like

1 ) People like the start bar ( so they improve it not hide it )
2 ) They know people like ease of use ( so they make it easier )

People don’t want crap like “Home Group” there was nothing wrong with the way it was ( it could have been a bit easyer ), Microsoft wants it because they can not find a real way to fix windows current problem

Just like IE 9, They are trying to control the market and they need to stop and remember what happened with Netscape, If they keep going the way they are I can see Apple sales going up.

    • Vmsoccer12

Hey stop being stupid you have the choice to going to classic view or the metro ui so stop whining and watch the video on windows 8 or something useful to stop your unintelligent comments. Oh and windows is easy to use if you have any brain at all a 7 year old can work a windows pc with no trouble.

      • Magnesium

Wow… way to go with the high brow, intelligent response. Oh wait, you didn’t. never mind. Nice ignorant immature response.

        • Weedwacker

ha ha cyber bashing people makes the world a better place and makes you look smarter.

    • ???????

start bar: how is it not improved???? theres the super bar…….

ease of use: ease of use??? hiding all the system settings and stuff makes it more easier to use???

      whats windows’ current problem?????

      • ????????

i dun really like it when closing a window just minimizes it :((

i like the touch pad of mac though, its cool ^^

other than that, i prefer full control over my computer.

        • http://twitter.com/sumankumar83844 win bitdefender 2010

i had never thought like such type of stupid peoples as you are so fool and so half mind…you should know windows 7 together with windows xp are used more than 80% in whole os industry..while vista covers only 10%…think about apple os it is used by ony 6-8% peoples around the world and rest other os have only 2% contribution together around the world at current..so tell me how can you compare such an stupid operating system as mac os is with industry os king windows and their os..windows 7 is worlds ever largest best selling os in the market with 400 million of os sold till now..which had never been done before in the case of any other operating system…so silly and stupid you are even apple mac os fails to compare itself with the failure one of windows that was vista…its still used by 10% of people around the world while apple os status is only 6-8%

            ok f**king retard…..
            1) some ppl still want to get some work done there is a huge border between smart phones and desktop computers…and apple is smart enough to draw the line
            2) Just because windows is used more than mac that does not mean it is better. I give windows leniency bcuz it has many users so more viruses yes, windows 7 is a fair OS, ubuntu (linux) is an example of a good OS and Mac OS X Lion/Snow L a great OS
3)Microsoft want to make money even more than apple cuz i mean they throw in bit locker on windows 7 pro call it ultimate and basically dubl the price…wtf…..
            4) Mac OS X will be better also because windows was made to work on a broader scale of computers while apple makes their own hardware and the software for it and so the interaction between hardware and software is better.

          • Cheese

Btw dnt comment jus cuz u cnt afford a mac

Before saying the windows 8 suck, you should try it. At first I too tough it was a dumb move my MS. But I tried the new UI with both my touchscreen and my keyboard&mice and guess what? I like the new UI more with the keyboard+mice because it’s easier to type and move between applications. What’s really nice about the new UI is that all the applications are full screen (you can have 2 or 3 open at the same time too on the screen), they can share data more easily, and more importantly when they are not shown on the screen, they are not running (makes your PC much faster). Also, Windows will no longer crash or hung up as applications are automaticaly terminated when they don’t respond after 15 seconds, and they crash too when they can’t go to sleep after 5 seconds. This will improve application’s quality and performance. Also, there’s a key to open the start menu, one to show the desktop, etc. so if you don’t like the new look, you don’t need to use it at all.

    • Pguerin20

oh and by ‘crashing’, it means the application will simply dissapear. There is no ‘application doesn’t respond’ dialog anymore (unless you are in the classic desktop). The only thing I really hate about the new UI is the new internet explorer. With no support for flash, it plains sucks. I believe MS should add support for flash for the people that want it.

im staying with vista win 7 sucks

  • Christyan Ramirez

I am a 100% pc guy. Running on windows 7. Even though i like the iphone and ipad, i was not convinced enough to use macs. I just know my way around a pc with ease than a mac. My biggest concern was compatibility issues, that’s why I stuck with Windows. However the way microsoft is going, I may be forced to learn how to use a mac. Which is not hard to do, (coming from a 7 yr old). With Windows, you need to take some courses to learn everything the system is capable of doing. I have been using a pc since 1990, when they were like $6000. So spending $2000 on a new mac may prove to be cost efficient if it’s easy to use and has there own growing app store for macs.
