Windows Explorer to have Ribbon UI in Windows 8

We have seen Microsoft including ribbon style in MS Office 2007 and after the success of it, ribbon UI was furthered introduced in Windows 7 in paint and word applications. Now Rafael Rivera has unveiled Ribbon UI in Windows Explorer in Windows 8. Going by the images Microsoft has included many dynamic tabs in Windows Explorer as introduced in Office. As Windows 8 is still in it’s primitive stages so the ribbon UI is not well finished and we may not see the Ribbon UI in the final product, though Rafael states that Microsoft has added the functionality to hide the Ribbon UI in explorer. Here are some of the images of Windows Explorer with Ribbon UI, for full set of images visit Rafael’s website.

While it’s good that they’re trying to implement a standard interface among their products, using the ribbon in Windows Explorer is unnecessary and clunky. There isn’t enough functionality to warrant such a large UI. It’s ugly too. Making more minor modifications to the previous UI would be better, IMO.

Of course, there is enough functionality. Imagine the most needed buttons and options of the Control Panel and Administrative Tools. These buttons and options can now be part of the Windows Explorer, so we need less time to search and click through the whole Control Panel and other stuff. You wanna manage your HDD? Just open Explorer, click on your HDD and there comes the dynamic HDD management Ribbon. No more need to go into Control Panel or Administrative Tools…. And this is only one single example…

Ribbon is one of the more uglyest and bad designed interface I have ever seen. Its difficult to have all buttons vissible in a interface that makes so difficult to find them even when the dawm button is in front your nose, and ribbon does exactly that. I really hope they dont use that thing in explorer, or at least give the option to remove it.
