Microsoft asking students for suggestions on Windows 8

In one of the posts on the Microsoft official facebook page for students,Microsoft is asking the students about their opinions and suggestions for the next generation OS codenamed Windows 8. The post reads as

You’ve all seen the ads, "Windows 7 was my idea". On that premise, what is your opinion on what should be included in the next release of Windows?

The link added their redirects to the Microsoft Student lounge page  which reads as follow:

What’s your opinion? What features do you think need to be in Windows 8?

You’ve all seen the ads, "Windows 7 was my idea".

On that premise, what is your opininon on what should be included in the next release of Windows?

Sky is the limit … thinking about the development platform, the usability, the visual aspects.  What do you think Microsoft needs to include in Windows 8?

Can’t wait to see your comments!

Some innovative comments have been posted by the students, so if want any feature to be included in Windows 8,be sure to leave a comment here.

    Hi…

You should make it easy for students to use it and many features and can be use in many types of computers or laptops whether it is new or old……

  • daan

it is easy to have a music, video and picture converter in the contextmenu and some tools to customize windows to a windows that everyone want (login screen, boot screen, the complete interface) and a tool to integrate linux software in windows (maybe mac too)

    Hi,

I am a student and i have come across many situations when i need more than 4gb of ram which is only possible in 64 bit…. but the programs on which i am suppose to work are not 64 bit compatible…. I want you to make few tweaks to increase memory limit in windows 8 32bit

    • ABn5clinYR

it is impossible it is a physical limit not a software limit, 64 bit costs just as much, all you have to do is make an upgrade from 32 bit to 64 bit in all installation packages

      • Aeschulaius

You can exceed 4 GB with PAE, and 32bit builds of Windows have had PAE, but depending on the edition, Microsoft imposed its own restriction so you still could not exceed the address space.

    • http://profiles.google.com/sharshil48 harshil sharma

Physical Address Extension may help you out…
It Expands your Main memory from 32-bit to 36-bit and automatically your memory limit exceeds up to its maximum limit..
      Google it.

Hello, 2012 is still far to come.Desktop Applications and friendly user Interface Demands must be taken into consideration. the least thing you could do is making two desktops just like Ubunto 23 and 3D UI. it will look more beautiful by giving an option to a user wheather he wants to customize the look of a desktop to 3d or 2d or wheather to choose 1,2 or 3 desktops or If the user wants to use the old windows version interface depending on his system minimum requirements. allowing a standard user to use extra tweaking and easy options when it comes to downloading a theme from a 3rd party developer to be granted an easy way to apply a theme without going through a long cycle like, replacing the Explorer.exe, Taking an ownership, and other long procedures which takes around 1 to 2 hours for a standard user to get it done. even though sometimes the windows crashes by modifying system main files for applying a theme. I hope you can do something about this. special thanks to microsoft for giving us a chance to share our suggestions and i hope to hear a good feedback from your side.

I think that there should be an easy way for a user to prioritize programs so that a specific program could run great (like a game of some sort) and other background programs wouldn’t be using memory, so that you could play a game or use a high memory using program without having to use a lot of extra memory on programs you didn’t need at the time.

Currently, in the Windows7 favorites menu on the left of the Windows Explorer, if a tagged drive is unavailable, when you click it you get an error prompt.

Windows 8: Show whether or not the drive is available in the list.

I think it would be cool to implement a slide out xbox controller to compete with android and playstation. Also because im a gamer and that would be sweet.

    • Andre Robinson

      For Windows Phone 8

  • Michael

make the next version of the os use less hard drive space but desinged where it would use less system resorces and use the power of the system resorcees to make aplicasion faster espechaly when turning the computer one. Also it needs to be able to automaticly turn off servas and suspend proicesses that are not needed so more system resorces are avalible. Also i would like to have the next version of windows where it would have GPS technology built in so that if a computer got stolen it would be easer to lcated it without buying a very expensive program and dealing with it where it can only obtan locasion onfo when it conects to the internet. Which i think needs to be upgraded to a GPS chip where it is always in sync. Also for people who have a viual inparment it would be best of intrest to have the resulousion and fot sized easer to change and have it where it would afect them on all aplicasions and menus so that i do not have to modift each one. Also have it affect the fonts in the web browser so i do not have to active the zoom funsion where it would affect every web page to use the smae font size.

    Some suggestions:
    1) Be able to choose themes and skins from previous versions of Windows, like XP and Windows Classic (actual, original thickness)
    2) Get a new startup sound/let the user choose the sound when it boots up…. I was a little disappointed with Windows 7 when it had the same as Vista’s
    3) Better/more visual effects, (can turn on/off), work like Linux (wobbly windows :) )
    4) Can choose the original/XP start menu, windows 7 and Vista were a bit harder to use with a scroll bar
    5) Bring back the original Sound Recorder, able to modify .wav sounds like before
    6) A mp3 (,etc)-.wav sound converter, it would be useful!

  • David

    Windows 8 should:
-include an advanced line of enhanced multimedia tools
-the original sound recorder from xp
-the ability to choose your desktop enviroment
    -quicker startup
    -antivirus intergrated into windows os

  • David

and they should also make a netbook edition that runs on limited hardware

  • http://j-da.co.cc JDa

I’d love to see a push into 64-bit. I also agree with less system resource usage and application priorities. Another problem with Windows 7 is that the Recent lists when you mouse over a program in the start menu only work if the file was opened with Windows Explorer, not the program itself, which is a real pain.

  • bonbon

Tools options like self-checking error/missing dll and increase 128 bits IP address
I like to see more forward runs up to 256 bits OS8. We are still slow running 32 bits is a little behind but I hope all companies and industries will catch up.

Windows 8!! People will be expecting a revolutionary and out-of-the-box thing from this new OS. Just adding some new UIs and sounds and good graphics is not all one needs.

Somethings that are most important in Windows 8:

    1. Performance: Booting time in Windows 7 is quite reduced but it need to be still optimized.
    2. Efficiency: Only required processor, Ram and Hardisk should be used.
    3. User Interface: Everything should be accessed at one clicked. Desktop should contain everything and no need of opening a new window for small things. Things can be in drop down detailed view.
    4. Multitasking: Still two users cannot switch their windows quite easily. Working on two documents at a time is still a pain.
    5. Entertainment: Inbuilt games should get some innovation rather from those typical Solitares and hearts. Other softwares for media playing, Disc writing, Imaging should be included.

There can be many more features and Microsoft people should work hard on what they are gonna offer. Hope for the best!! :)

  • prabhat dansena

there should be a different version for student and programer for providing programing environment .
and should should be provided inbuilt .net.

  • Kunal

Hi till now most problem for using new windows is software compatibility issue.
so I wish that New OS from Microsoft might not have any software compatibility issue

  • T

dont forget with new windows movie maker,,,, im very dissampointed, cz at windows 7 I didn’t found it,

  • Timothy

I would like to see the media player have a better look and user friendly quality like simpler menus.
I am also very frustrated with the administrator feature of windows 7 because I am the only user on my computer and I am logged on as the administrator but some programs will not let me delete them after I have installed them because I get a message saying I do not have administrator rights.

  • Renzo

Choose color for superbar and start menu. Not just one color for both.

  • http://gmail sasuke

Better visual effects,I would like to see the media player have a better look and quicker startup this will make it a perfect windows

  • Palak

hey i think that there should be one feature for doing programing and another thing that student are using different compilers for c language like in india most of the student use “Turbo C++” compiler and in windows 7 we cant use this type of particular compiler because of it’s 16 bit software. So i would like to tell you that please make 1 compiler or give some additional feature like running command prom in full screen.

    • Diegoallen

Have you heard about visual c++?

      • Afnan Makhdoom

yes, i guess every one has… lol

      • Afnan Makhdoom

yes, i guess every one has… lol

    • randysvh

you can run Turbo C++ in a compatibility mode which is built into Windows 7.

You can make a CMD full screen as well.  Both features are already there.

windows 7 not accepting drivers in i3 processors… it requires motherboard cd… make these changes in windows8….

  • Stefan Dahlmann

Windows 8 should include a sort of “copy queue”. When I copy huge amounts of data from one disk to the other, and then start copiing a second file to that drive, both will be copied at the same time, slowing it down considerably.

I think that Windows 8 should include a sort of copy queue. one must be able to right click “add to copy queue” a file, so that it will be copied as soon as the first copy job is done.

  • Johnazaira

It’s impossible to make a crash free OS becuase no software is perfect. It’s also the matter of hardware that you have, so even if Window 8 is crash free it wont matter if you don’t have good stable hardware..
the best way to do to avoid a crash on a new Windows OS is having the proper hardware up to date as well as drivers.
The older the hardware is in your computer the more of a risk of a crash on any Windows Os you will have.
Its good idea to have good up to date hardware, drivers and settings.
One more thing regardless of how new is you computer and Os its always good to have a back up disc, SSD or HDD.

  • Adept Daniel

I would like to see a “restart in safe mode button” as part of the shut down, restart, logoff menu, to make it easier to troubleshoot software and get to that feature.

  • Jeje

    can run Mac OS! :)

  • Janmejaipratapsingh

i used windows 7 ultimate on my desktop i tried to use nero 7, daemon tools but they are not working whereas my friend use window 7 home premium and these softwares are working on his lappy and the compiler turboc3 is not working properly bcs it’s an 16 bit compiler and in india it is the most used compiler

  • katgski

In Microsoft Word, I would like to be able to “copy” for than one thing at a time. I often copy something important, then have to copy something over it, then have to go BACK to my original text to re-copy. It would be nice to have a “clipboard” that can hold multiple things from different p;laces, including the internet.

Windows 8 should incorporate the Kinect as a means to control it. This would revolutionize the way that people interact with computers. I want to wake up and eat breakfast and read the paper by looking at the computer monitor mounted on the kitchen wall and be able to control it hands-free. My wife could use it to access a recipe list from a folder without washing her hands to do so, allowing her to cook and interact with a computer simultaneously. I think the Kinect & Windows 8 would put a computer in every room, and imagine what it would do for businesses.

Actually, as part of new desktop comuters, Kinect is being built in with facial recognition being apart of windows 8 to allow users to sign on and control their desktop applications via voice and touch. Confirmed by leaked Microsoft Windows 8 reports

    hi,

im a highschool student from philippines, and i am really excited to test the windows 8. i was a windows xp servce pack 3 user when I jumped into windows 7 (well i skip using vista for some reason. so much bugs, and i hate its themes. 7 rocks).
I am expecting for a new desktop look and window look. i just wanted to say that
when I used WINDOWS 7, Folders look messy especially when they are many unlike in WINDOWS XP. it looks very organize. Second one, a very strong built in antivirus that will protect you against vulnerable high security risk. Third one, in INTERNET EXPLORER. I.E browser is such a HEAVY CPU USAGE user and a RAM MEMORY eater. Fourth, sidebars will decreased its memory usage. perhaps, its good to have a sidebar on yoru desktop. it helps you a lot. weather, calendar, clock and much more. also I expect that windows 8 can be install also into 1 gb ram, it will be awesome. next one
it can remote desktop using internet (WAN). just type the users ip and put its username and password and it will prompt the user if he/she will accept it. then they will be able to share up things via Internet. it will be good. and most of all a well optimize and faster startup and more FONTS collection

On Screen Display for Volume and Brightness – Live 3RVM software does. Come on MS lets get with the times and provide some feedback to the user

multiple docks, 3d environment desktop, multi-touch screen, 3 dimensional cursor, password protect files/folders
voice activated programs, voice commands (open, close, delete, etc) voice activated login, remote login, data recovery backup system, multi-partion for multi os (like apple)

    • mike

alot of this is already available in windows 7, granted you need to set it up but it is there.

i would like if microsoft make windows 8 able to support all the audio video  or ever drivers are which are  supported with windows7 at current..so that current windows7 users can easily move to windows 8 without the worry of drivers availability.

    Have live wallpaper.
Paint should have a 3-d figure button on which you click and it make your drawings 3-d

    • Triavalon

I’m not sure about a 3-d button, but paint hasn’t changed since 95. It definitively needs an update

      • Mike

…they already have? not by alot but its been updated a bit.

  • Devesh

Type in your user name and password on any computer and it opens you page

  • Sampie2611

Windows 8 should include a feature to install the basics on a usb harddrive, so you still can use windows even when your hdd is broken down
It also needs to include a way to install and use programs without limitations because someone else installed the computer and lost his password,

  • guest

I would like to copy a profile to the default user easily like in XP!

  • Whyimbored

take everything that made windows 7 great and add on to it

  • Tablet PC User Dude

Honestly you guys should make just about all of the interface customizable. For normal desktop computer or laptop users, they can make buttons, task bars, and edges as small as they like (as they use precise track pads or mouses), but for the growing tablet world, we can make everything as large as we need for our fat fingers to be able to manipulate.
Also some new feature needs to be incorporated into the process of right clicking… Having to hold one’s finger or stylus down on the screen simply takes to long.

  • Anonymous

When right clicking a file, and then going to the “send to” menu, there should be a browse file option so that we can choose where to send files instead of the limited default options or instead of having to open another window to drag to.
    Thanks!

  • ejm

put the old maze screen saver back up

  • ejm

it needs to have a free remote access feature that would allow you to have a quality image on a “iPad” tip device that would actual be good and in real time, i want to be able to remote into my computer and watch a movie without it being choppy or lagging like the ones do know

  • Amogh

Genuine Windows Vista (32-bit) can be upgraded to windows 8 ….

  • Francisco

Windows 8 should incorporate the Kinect as a means to control it.
Windows 8 should incorporate connetion integrated to Nokia devices.
Windows and Nokia should present a tablet PC in a low of moths.
Windows 8 and mobile Nokia full integration wihtout cable.

    • Someone

      Already done Kinect idea
Already added support for tablet PC
Microsoft aren’t fully part of Nokia and are trying to do the following you asked but for Windows phones.

  • Revanth

hoping it’ll be better than win 7

Allow us to choose which keyboard shortcuts we want to be active. Some of them get in my way while I’m typing.

  • UMich

I would like to be able to make any window always appear on top by a simple option next to the minimize/maximize/close buttons. Or even from right-clicking the bar at the top of the screen.

-I wonder why that functionality is limited to the mini itunes player.

  • Madhanger

can you please make windows 8 more programing friendly as i might have to buy a mac for uni to program c it would also put your product back in hands of programers rather than macs

  • vicky parikh

    low consumption of ram…

  • Delgado0

I would like to see the option of having external hard drives, flash drives, and smart cards show up on the desktop with an icon. Giving you a eject option when you right click on them. Something I am very fond of since I use both Mac & PC. I really get tired on going to the task bar or ejecting from the devices window when it shows up.
