In one of the posts on the Microsoft official facebook page for students,Microsoft is asking the students about their opinions and suggestions for the next generation OS codenamed Windows 8. The post reads as

You’ve all seen the ads, "Windows 7 was my idea". On that premise, what is your opinion on what should be included in the next release of Windows?

The link added their redirects to the Microsoft Student lounge page  which reads as follow:

What’s your opinion? What features do you think need to be in Windows 8?

You’ve all seen the ads, "Windows 7 was my idea".

On that premise, what is your opininon on what should be included in the next release of Windows?

Sky is the limit … thinking about the development platform, the usability, the visual aspects.  What do you think Microsoft needs to include in Windows 8?

Can’t wait to see your comments!

Some innovative comments have been posted by the students, so if want any feature to be included in Windows 8,be sure to leave a comment here.

    windows 8?????

  • Shahadat Hossain

Don’t make windows 8 like the other operating system ,make it gorgeous/beautiful/splendid,cheap and capable of running in normal PC using less REM (256MB)and Hard disk(as low as possible).

  • navneet

there should be an option for taskbar switch to mac style or windows style making graphical interface more attractive.

  • http://mstech.net manish

well windows 8 will be supporting 128bit computing and the major different with other windows OS releases will be “no taskbar” new winFS platform and will be “fully customizable”.

  • http://windows8beta.com Ankur Mittal

Manish 128bit support for Windows 8 are just the rumors and let’s see what other changes are introduced in next OS

  • http://Google.co.in Varun

    To Microsoft,
    I am Varun.
My suggestion is that we wil include Microsoft Plus Superpack edition in Win 8.
We will make taskbar look like which is in Win XP.
We will write start in left hand side.
We will make Win 8 compatible with pentium 4 processor.

You all keep bit size as same as win 7(32 bit and 64 bit).

  • http://Google.co.in Varun

We will include Internet Explorer 11 in win 8.
We will include Windows Media Player 14 in it.
We will make win 8 compatible with Intel(R) 82845G/GL Graphics Controler, Avance AC97 audio driver.

    System Requirements for Windows 8
    1.gigahertz (GHz) or faster 32-bit (x86) or 64-bit (x64) processor.

I liked the features of win 7.

  • http://www.google.co.in/ Varun

    Windows 7 is very good.

  • http://www.google.co.in/ Varun

we will make win 8 in the form of pen drive instead of cd

  • Ivo

They should really leave the Windows 7 look and feel behind for Windows 8 and go back to the Windows Vista (mostly) look and feel (NOT USAGE)!! Vista was absolutely gorgeous!

  • Shihab

Hey, Varun R u working for Windows 8 team?

or what ..your comment makes it kinda hazy, plz let me know …

  • anant

window 8 beta should work on asus motherboard

because when window 7 beta was released
it was not working on asus motherboard p5kpl-cm

  • http://google.co.in Varun

I tried windows 7 but it is being crashed after 6 days after install.
    What should be done?
Do not allow win 8 to crash.

  • http://windows8beta.com Ankur Mittal

anant it depends on your motherboard, it may not be compatible with Windows 7,so it wont even work with next OS. @Varun I have been using the RTM version since September and haven’t rebooted my laptop till yet,it is probably the longest time I am using the same Windows without rebooting and still it’s pretty stable

    Dear Microsoft

Hopefully you will take my suggestion seriously.

I am using Windows since 95. So I have seen the development of this software. I have some suggestions to improve it.
    1. make the taskbar reorderable. That means if I open a new word document after other program than it will be kept after it in the taskbar. Of course windows can organize it as it likes but I would like to do it as I like.
    2. Make keyboard customizable. I mean for any key any function, any combination. Both windows and program specific.
    3. Surely you should include multiple desktop feature.
    4. And on the top. Why are you using binary system to run a PC. You could use trinary based on three (plus, minus & 0) or even octadic system based on eight shades of light (red, green, blue, yellow, cyan, magenta, white & black). In this way you could increase speed by multiples. Just consider the binary 2, 4, 8, and trinary 3, 9… in the second stage is more than double of the binary, what to speak of at the stages of Gigabits.
Hopefully someone will consider these points and make windows better. I mean much much better.

    PS
I hope that you will send me a free copy of windows 8. :)

A greate windows 8 shold be able to run any game from all earlyer windows.
The new win 8 have have to learn from it’s everyday user. So after using the computer for a week or more, the computer sould be able to tell the user if any adisjonal hardware should be added. RAM etc.
The computer should be able to adjust every the settings by itself from gadering information during the use of its owner.
The new windows should have a grate included office pacage because the price of each the win + office is to greate for moust people.
You vill get a lot more byers this way and less piracy.
You should also make shure that every contry is given a max price, this is moust important for people in countryes like norway.
The new win 8 should have a built inn warning about duplicate files.
win 8 chould be able to chouse the best program for each single job.
win 8 should have a intergrated zip program for any zip file.

If you are trying to make the win 8 as wersitail as posible in stad of trying to find limits to wourk inside. the win 8 vill be the best oerating system ever.
The maker of the operatingprogram has to underst that moust people do not have a lot of computer skils. So think easy, like making a program for a child.
    Good luck with win 8.

    Something non dream able!

  • X

Hey. My suggestion is that you re-add microsoft dreamscene to windows 8. Vista ultimate had it but it was sadly removed form windows 7. The motion backgrounds make the desktop more attractive and and interesting. I currently have a patched version of it running on my windows 7 and am loving it. Besides, static backgrounds are so boring and over done. Also don’t make the interface look like any previous windows version (eg, windows 7 looking like windows vista), redo the start button and start menu. Keep the see-through effects though, not the same as the previous versions but similar, it makes for a more enjoyable, aethstically pleasing and modern working experience.

so simple, make windows 8 free from bugs…

  • GEMS

    Windows 8!
Windows 8 should have more customizable options.!
No NEED of third party software
And a very fast boot time!

plz install all the fonts in windows 8 specially indian fonts.
make it compatible with graphic card

  • Daniel

Well one thing i’d really love for Win8 is to be able to set a password for active windows so that if someone tried to close them, you would need a passord. This should be easy to do like from the menu bar or something, under tools/tasks/etc, or under edit, or file or something.

Also, it would be fun to have 3d desktop backgrounds. Literally 3d and you can even move it around using the mouse or something to see the rest of the background. Movement could be an option within the right-click menu or whatever its called, in where you right-click an empty space on the desktop and choose the option “move background” or something, and then a button on the keyboard or a button on the mouse could return it back to normal.

Win8 could also come with entire award-winning, great, and/or staff picked books that people would like to read when they start out using their new computer (or new system). The book/s could be in My Books or something in My Documents along with the other “My’s” like My Pictures, My Videos, My Music, My Etc.

  • Daniel

I would love it if Microsoft could finally, after lots of Windows systems, let you call file and folders with all those symbols you arent allowed to put in for some stupid reason, like / and other ones that dont come to mind right now. Seriouly I dont see the problem in letting all those symbols able to be in files and folders’ names.

    • Mark Ayers

Because / separates folders. Because all those special characters mean special things in the command line.

  • Bleh

Here is a smart idea go a lil upity on your gui front end perhaps even make window positioning smart as in symmetrical when it comes to positioning, now that we have gui out of the way. Get rid of the registry way of doing things if you seriously care about kernel security. Integrate smart managers that can allow indexing of files and directories, searching alone does little justice if it doesn’t know its alphabet it should take 10 seconds not 10 years. Find a way around System and System32 way of handling dll files, its like your purposely letting hackers rape the OS. Linked libraries should have a 3rd party handler, so anything fed to the kernel should not be an absolute direct link as the name implies.

Last but not least fire Ballmer!!

  • yusuf

    Waiting patiently

  • lucas

need to have an realy good elasticy to personalizate the next windows, very flexible in the personalizating area

  • vijyat

can Win 8 ac as a RTOS ? would like to haev that with a faster boot time.

  • Aniket

First thing what people see is the looks, the interactivity. Windows 8 should have much more 3d thing happening as far looks. less ram use and better performance with a low end system also….
As far what i can see about mac is there interaction is well made and quite attractive, Windows can do such things.
one main point as this is a generation where everything is going super fast.. why cant the desktop screen come as soon as the system starts….
3D movies are another big thing happening now days few features should come as 3d view where people have to wear glasses and see. May be a different user account or something where you have to wear glasses (3D) to do whatever you want to do…which i things adds life to the desktop also….

  • http://sami89.gurusofit.com Samiullah Khan

    Make Win8 faster.
Include Ubuntu-Compiz like features at least provide a platform to be developed fro Win8.
Add right click uninstall for a program.
Different versions for hardcore gamers and normal users.
Built in and pre-installed Web Server.
    Docking Application.

  • Carl R S

To the person who suggested Trinary: It would not be possible. Current computer hardware can only understand 2 numbers, 0 and 1, and that’s nothing MS could change. In fact, I doubt that will change in the next 10 to 20 years.
In addition, I don’t think the chances of MS actually listening to what we say here are too high. I’ve got some suggestions, but I’m quiiiite sure it’s all been suggested already, anyway.

hi buddy… i just wanted to say that my opera is freezing when I click on the links… are you using some JavaScript or something?

  • nitroinhidro

cool i wanna get one but can you send me the link or something

  • MS lover

Use the METRO UI because aero, has well lost its touch, try to separate the basic user to the developer by really blocking out dlls and important files that should not be tampered with by the unskilled user, auto empty temp files and more efficancy. an app store, remember make it easier for the user to experiance windows, try to incorperate WCE 7 if you can. and make it efficent as possible.

  • CJ

Be able to connect to home network from anywhere!

    • Alec

they already have that, came out years ago. called windows home server and set up a domain via windows live :)

      • Scracken

Then they need to make it obvious not just announce something is available somewhere else and not integrate it into their OS immediately. Which is what they typically do. Poor execution is what they REALLY need to work on.

        • Someone

True. But what if everything made by Microsoft that wasn’t already included in Win. 7 was included with it? Imagine the amount of stuff the average user won’t need or want and how much longer it will take to install!

  • http://www.timscomputing.com Tim

Actually recode windows to optimize searchs, efficiency, power handling features, and SECURITY..not just add another program thats going to use up more ram and not catch a thing like windows defender..i mean RECODE and REORGANIZE it… windows has ALWAYS had the dcom holes and dll registry issues.. how about try something closer to linux…you know.. what DOESNT get virus’s and crash like vista? LOL The internet is SO TERRIBLE with spyware, malware, and virus’s…in this day and age.. you cant really afford to patch another fix…come out with both guns blazing..and hope you do screw the pooch like Vista! LOL

  • Ben

An interesting idea I have seen throughout some Linux versions and even some Mac systems is the possibility to have interchangable desktops.

There are programs for Windows XP, Vista and 7 that enable this. There are multiple desktops with different backgrounds and Icons which can be switched between with ease.

This enables the user to have different backgrounds and programs ont he desktop to do different jobs. I myself am a student, a gamer and a PC entheusiast but I have to cram all my icons all onto a songle screen (well across 2 now i’ve connected up another monitor). However the extra desktops would allow me to get rid of my other monitor as I would be able to store everything across the desktops.

I can have one specifically for university holding useful websites, program shortcuts and Word files, one for my gaming with a Half life 2 background and all the shortcuts for my games and then I can have a final one which I would keep a sandbox (sandboxie) and other useful tools as well as websites for my PC messing.

A few programs on the internet already do this and are simple small programs with many options and features. Surely a company like Microsoft can take this simple idea and make something special and intriging with it. From Xp to Vista it was mostly a graphical, visual and aesthetis upgrade. From Vista to 7 it was a cleaner and tidyer system upgrade. Now people are expecting more from Windows 8.

This could be the new 3D cascading windows in windows 8 that made Vista so much more fun to use than XP. It could be something that you include souly to the x64 or even x128bit OS!

  • Jordan

Boy, do I have a TON of suggestions for Windows 8 (which, of course, does NOT mean you guys are doing a bad job). I’ll only list ten of them.

    1. Face recognition login
    - If a different face is registered, the user can be prompted to switch profiles

    2. Multiple desktops
    - Enable up to four users to use one desktop each, with unused desktops for sharing files, windows, etc.

    3. Collective Program Modules
    - Created when two or more programs are used frequently at the same time
    - Utilized when one of the programs is opened
    - Displays a quick-access menu of programs in the same module

    4. Favourite Document Modules
    - Created when a program is frequently used to modify the same document(s)
    - Utilized when the program is opened
    - Displays a quick-access menu of all documents used with the program

    5. Voice-like sounds

    6. Skins, themes and sounds to look like customized templates for this or previous versions of Windows

    7. Program Manager
    - Replaces “Add/Remove Programs”
    - Online purchases, downloads and updates of Microsoft or third-party software
    - Searches for Windows-compatible programs

    8. Lots more games, including online play
    - Backgammon
    - Checkers
    - Chinese Checkers
    - Jigsaws
    - Poker
    - Reversi
    - Rummy Tiles
    - Yahtzee

    9. File annotations

    10. Customizable Taskbar

These are some items I am especially hoping for in the next version of Windows.

    • Marcusr8er

Umm, you can download software for all of that….

      • B-rrad

Why have to download all this extra stuff, when windows should have it already!? get with the times Broo.

    • Scracken

I agree with all these, at least as options to install. Program Management a must!!! Get with it.

    • LinuxRocks

I love how Linux has had all of these things for ages now.

  • Mark

A great feature would be to use 3D shapes to store tasks on. For example, A cube could store the last six pages of internet history and you could rotate it to move to application. This would give you an object for the project your dealing with. You could use any shape with as many sides as you wish for a project. A project shape could then consist of the applications used with it. So when you want to do something that say uses a word document, an web page, or an excel sheet each task takes a side of the project shape. This would speed up work on projects.

  • Chris

    For windows 8,
    1) The problem with botnets is growing: Is it possible to warn the users when potential malware attempts to change the operating system? Give a good warning and name the program that is trying to change the operating system, give the exact location, date it was downloaded, how it was launched, and offer to quarantine it? Is it possible to offer an easy way to check for potential rootkits at startup (I downloaded for the Windows site and did not get a disc for 7).

    2) Easy access to updates on security matters including abode, windows, office, and IE and the relative patches.

    3) Is it possible to make the system have no more than 1.5 GB of RAM required?

    4) Allow multiple authentication log-on, as with my current computer (Fingerprint scanner on my windows 7 is my favorite feature).

    5) With the windows update, is it possible to add a feature that checks for updates after system start-up? Currently, mine only offers a time of day to check for updates.

    6) Is it possible to have a type of lojack system installed in the computer in case the user losses the computer the person would be able to locate it from a different computer, multiple authentication and one time password, with privacy guaranteed.

    7) Is it possible to have applications run in sandboxes?

    8) Warn users of potential security issues with websites that are currently affecting people.

    9) Allow a secondary hard drive in the computer to run weekly back-ups of the operating system, so if the computer is compromised, the back-up operating system would be able to replace the corrupted operating system at start up.

    10) Allow the users that do not want these functions the option of disabling them.

    • Chris (again)

      11) When the user first turns on the computer, have it open in an enhanced safe mode which only allows internet access to the windows update site and remains in that state until the latest OS and app software updates are downloaded. (The current time between a new computer being turned on and infected with malware is under 5 minutes)

      12) Have the operating system run in a way that the battery life last for at least 10 hours.

Pls theree should webcam driver on windows 8 for sony vaio VGN-fe790P and sony products in general since windows 7 has let us down in that area. apart from the webcam problem i am having windows 7 is great. windows 8 should be an improvement. well done guys and everyone in microsoft.

  • Waqas

Hi, My suggestion to you about Windows 8 is that you should have some shiny/glossy in windows 8. For example when you`ll open a windows, then then new windows will aslo look glossy/shiny with transparent.

    • mike

      like windows 7?

  • Zii

They should make it so it looks amazing, like if you play music, it responds well and gives other great options for it. In other words, it should be “really” customizable.

  • Tony

Make windows 8 beta’s available to at least college students, to help with the beta testing before it goes to full open. Can you tell that i want a beta? xD

We here in Alaska are already behind on the technology front, it would be nice if we had access to a beta or RC

    • Matthew

They always have beta’s for any U.S state, and im pretty sure most other countries/languages as well.

    • mike

they had beta’s for anyone who wanted to join for windows 7… i was a student at the time and i had one.

      • Pritam Sankar08

Hie friend can u please tell me where can i find the BETA or RC of Win-8 for testing purpose.

    • Xoptimizedrsx

I would like in as an IT student myself. I am searching how to get into the beta work on user testing…
